OUR APPROACH

test

Sammontana Italia is a group born from the union of several family businesses with a strong entrepreneurial spirit. These businesses share a deep sense of responsibility and a continuous commitment to the well-being of the communities where they originated. Guided by a long-term vision of their role, they have pursued constant innovation, fostering sustainability and promoting people’s well-being. This shared commitment continues to grow, becoming deeply ingrained across the Group and its brands. Today, several of these brands are already certified as B Corporations.

The activities of Sammontana Italia are driven by clear principles: sustainable supply chains, environmental stewardship, and health and well-being.

A COMMITMENT BUILT ON  three pillars

Sammontana Italia has organised its environmental, social, and governance sustainability journey around three key commitments:

HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

We care deeply about our consumers,  their health, and their well-being, offering indulgent, healthy, and safe products that cater to diverse nutritional needs.

We also prioritise our people, the large community that forms Sammontana Italia—ensuring it is a place where they can grow and achieve their aspirations.

Our commitments include:

  • Enhancing the nutritional profile and safety of our products beyond category standards while maintaining their satisfying taste and indulgent experience.

  • Redesigning our recipes to offer delicious options for those with specific dietary requirements (lactose-free, sugar-free, gluten-free, vegan, or vegetarian).

  • Reducing food waste at every stage—from production and packaging to distribution—and supporting the donation of soon-to-expire products to charitable organisations.

  • Ensuring safety and promoting the well-being of Sammontana’s people through equitable, inclusive, and participatory policies and training opportunities.

SUSTAINABLE SUPPLY CHAINS

Our commitment to sustainable supply chains is a guiding principle for the new Sammontana Group as it embarks on a long-term sustainability journey.

We prioritise sourcing practices that adhere to certification standards, ensuring compliance with social, economic, and environmental sustainability requirements.

In addition to commitments to animal welfare, we are consistently launching new responsible supply chain projects—starting with the main ingredients of our products and extending to secondary supply chains. A prime example is the almond used in our Amando ice cream line, for which we have developed the "Almond Code." This code establishes specific rules regarding sustainability standards, biodiversity, resource management, circularity, and value sharing.

Wherever possible, Sammontana favours sustainability certifications such as Rainforest Alliance or Fairtrade for cocoa and coffee and RSPO for palm oil.

The Group has also implemented a supplier code of conduct, which is being gradually extended across the entire supply chain. This code is accompanied by a questionnaire evaluating environmental, social, and governance (ESG) sustainability parameters.

Sammontana is dedicated to animal welfare and actively develops new responsible supply chain projects, spanning primary ingredients to secondary supply chains.

ENVIRONMENT

sammontana-impegno-pilastri-ambiente

We are committed to reducing the environmental impact of our activities by focusing on several key areas:

  • Decarbonisation: riduciamo le emissioni di gas serra in modo costante. Inoltre, Sammontana Società Benefit ha tracciato la sua curva di decarbonizzazione sulla base di uno studio di organizzazione secondo lo standard ISO14064. Questo studio nel corso del 2025 verrà esteso all'intero gruppo e sarà dunque possibile tracciare un piano di decarbonizzazione secondo standard scientifWe are steadily reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Sammontana Società Benefit has outlined its decarbonisation curve based on an ISO 14064-compliant organisational study. By 2025, this study will be extended across the entire Group, enabling the creation of a scientifically grounded decarbonisation plan.

  • Water: we are optimising water use, promoting reuse, and minimising waste. For instance, in our Empoli and Vinci facilities—located in areas with high water stress—we have implemented reverse osmosis systems to recover water, reducing both withdrawals and discharges.

  • Energy: We are committed to energy efficiency and sourcing renewable energy. Approximately 70% of the energy we use comes with guarantees of origin.

  • Industrial Waste:  We aim to reduce waste by promoting process circularity and improving waste separation and recovery.

  • Packaging: We are minimising environmental impact by using recyclable packaging and secondary/tertiary materials derived from recycled sources. We also work to raise consumer awareness of proper disposal practices.

DESIGNING THE FUTURE THROUGH ECO-DESIGN

sammontana-impegno-pilastri-ecodesign

Eco-design is a systematic approach that considers environmental aspects during the design and development process, aiming to reduce environmental impacts throughout a product’s lifecycle. (ISO 14050:2020).

We apply eco-design to the whole product/ process life cycle while developing a new product/ process or when we modify an existing product/ process.

Sammontana has long employed its own eco-design implementation procedures, developed in collaboration with Spinlife, a spin-off of the University of Padua. This approach integrates environmental considerations into the design and development of all products, supported by appropriate reporting and the scientific methodology of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA).

Sammontana's eco-design activities include:

  • Monitoring and reducing the carbon footprint of the Barattolino line through packaging innovations using certified paper and consistent attention to ingredient composition without compromising taste;

  • Researching optimised formulations and selecting more sustainable packaging solutions;

  • Conducting LCA studies on the environmental performance of various ice cream and pastry product lines;

  • Applying eco-design principles to production processes and logistics.

This expertise will be extended to other brands within the Group, enabling a comprehensive review of production and logistics processes.

CONTRIBUTING TO THE SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS

SAMMONTANA AS A BENEFIT CORPORATION

Since 2023, Sammontana Spa has been a

Benefit Corporation

What does it mean to be a Benefit Corporation?

It means committing to creating a positive impact on society and the planet.

Introduced in Italy in 2016 (the first country in Europe), this legal framework combines business objectives with common benefit goals, aiming to create value for communities, people, the environment, and territories in a responsible, sustainable, and transparent manner.

Sammontana’s dedication to sustainability led to its B Corp certification at the end of 2024. This certification was granted following an independent and objective assessment by B Lab, evaluating Sammontana’s social and environmental impact based on five categories: governance, workers, community, environment, and customers.

As a B Corp, Sammontana joins a global movement of companies and individuals working together to transform the economic system into one based on equity, inclusion, regeneration, and interdependence.

Sammontana Spa Società Benefit has laid the groundwork for certifying the entire Group, with renewal planned by 2027.
